Vierne: 3 Nocturnes, Op.34

An AI recommended Vierne to me.  I browsed IMSLP.  I looked at the score of Nocturnes, I thought that the sounds may be beatifule.  I read and played them, I felt if I had heard them before, even though I didn't actually had.  Déjà-entendu.

I first played his later work and his earlier work, then I decided to move on to Nocturnes.

The texts are written in the score.  I translated them from French to English using an AI.  I supposed that they may have meaning of the text itself and also metaphors.

I felt something or some images while playing the pieces repeatedly, however, I often played them in a superficial way, enjoying the resonance.

No. 1

As usual, the dynamic range is limited on my digital piano.  I played ff in No.1 as expressively as possible to capture the atmosphere of ff.

No. 2

I felt that the piece still carried strong emotions, but overall it leaves an impression of warmth, mystery, memory ... - starting with EM7 and ...

No. 3

It starts with black keys.

I felt that the residue of the first movement dissolved into particles, evanscing ...  after bursts while listening to birds singing at dawn.

Recording method

These days, I experienced with recording my digital piano by a ZOOM H1essential via PHONES or LINE OUT, but I felt the sound was a bit harsh.

I also tried recording with a ZOOM h1n by connecting to my digital piano via PHONES while playing live.  However, I felt the sound contained a little harsh sound.

Ultimately, I felt the previous method was better: first, recording the performance on my digital piano, and then, playing it back through the ZOOM h1n via PHONES to record the output.  I felt this method produced the sound that was a bit milder to the ears.

The volume of my digital piano is slightly above 1.

The input level of my h1n is between 4 and7, usually a bit above 5 -  I adjust it to avoid clipping.

For rapid pieces, I felt the sound by this method was a bit sluggish compared to my actual playing; it may be due to a slight lag i n my digital piano.

Someday I have a soundproof room and a real piano, I might use ZOOM H1essential.

J.S. Bach: Italian Concerto, BWV 971 J.S.

ZOOM h1n

These days, I organized data, artworks, etc.

I remembered a piano teacher with whom I studied as an adult at Kawai Omotesandou.  She recommended this suite - perhaps she liked playing it.  It was at that time that I finally learned it.

I recorded this suite in 2023.  I played the 1st and 3rd movements on digital harpsichord.

I've been thinking about how to enjoy playing them (the first and third movements).

(I like the 2nd movement.)

This time I played all the movements on digital piano.

I think that it is difficult to play since I may feel that in some parts the first notes of the right and left hands are not so harmonized well.

I found that I felt the score, as a set of shapes, may be beautiful - scale (big flows) and tiny  flows, etc.

The piano teacher I mentioned said that she felt good whenever she played it well.

This time I realized that whether I can play it through to the end may depend on the atmosphere and spirituality at the moment, as well as my physical condition and finger technique.

The above three tracks are the earliest recordings using ZOOM h1n.

 ******
The first movement (recording track using ZOOM h1n) received a copy right claim for using an audio of a CD.  I submitted a dispute.
 ******

ZOOM H1essential

I bought a new recorder ZOOM H1essential, 32bit floating.

This recorder is different from h1n, I felt the sounds were different.
I tried recording several times.

For ZOOM h1n, I used to record on the digital piano first, then played it back to capture the audio on the recorder.
I had to adjust to the input volume on ZOOM h1n to avoid clipping, sometimes capture the same piece for several times while changing the input volume.

With ZOOM H1essential, there is no input level knob, it is 32bit floating, no need to worrie about clipping.
I found that direct recording to ZOOM H1essential may be better.  I connected a phone output to my headphones to play the digital piano and connected another phone output to ZOOM H1essential to capture it.
In Audacity, I found that less processing may be better.   If peaks are too high, I simply apply Normalize.  Then, I export it as 48k 24bit wav.

I made the track private because the sound (recorded with my digital piano and ZOOM H1essential) sounded a bit harsh.

-----**------**------**-----

Arrange

I found that I felt easy to play J. S. Bach Italian Concerto BWV 971 the first and third movements if the key is in minor.

I played the third movement starting in F minor, adding lights (Major keys), and ending in F minor.

F minor
F Major (original)

The title doesn't have a specific meaning.

I think it may be a rhythmical phrase.

itsuka ikitai.
I've never been to Italy.  I want to visit someday.

ituka no italia.
Sometimein Italy - ancient, or a past for someone, etc..

This track was recorded on ZOOM H1essential and the sound may be a bit harsh.

Rameau: Les tendres plaintes

I turned the pages of the book of Rameau I have, I decided to play the pieces titled 恋の嘆き, complaint of Love.

I'm not familiar with  meaning of "tendre" love in court culture of at that time.

I imagined a more abstract emotion, feeling, .

Home Recording: ZOOM h1nvp 48k 16bit wav

Today I found an game app of polyrythm.  I watched it without playing or  listening to pulses.   ......  it gave me  a stomachache...

I decided to practice 3:5......., but ......
I imagined flower petals fluttering dancing and shades while playing it.

After playing it, I learned that 3 and 5 are the numbers of petals on many flowers.

Satie: Gymnopédie

Digital Piano: KAWAI CA9500GP. 442Hz, Loudness

Home Recording: ZOOM h1nvp 48k 16bit wav

This piece was composed and published in 1888.
... three 8s.

This time, I slightly arranged (?) the piece.
First, I played Satie Gymnopedie No.1 in my own groove at the moment rather than exactly as noted, and recorded it on my digital piano.
Then, while listening to the recording, I added octave tones with the una corda.  I played octave tones - below the left-hand tones and above the  right-hand tones - and recorded it on my recorder.
(I think it may be a bit difficult for two people to play, as one player sit behind another player to reach lower and higher tones.)

260210 improvisation at Night

Digital Piano: KAWAI CA9500GP. 442Hz, Loudness

Home Recording: ZOOM h1nvp 48k 16bit wav

I had been thinking about Satie's Gymnopedies ...

Today I talked with AI,

When I asked how to change the colors of an image, it generated an image of a imaginary paint tool with a non-existent title "3Dイカペイント".  The actual title of the 3D paint is "3Dペイント".  "イカ" was added which means a squid.  3D Squid Paint....?

While talking about characters, it said that "ピアノ" was five characters.  "ピアノ" is three characters.  "piano" is five characters.  It said that it prioritized "piano" in English language than "ピアノ" in Japanese.

It said that these are hallucination.
(It said that it was not so very good at drawing an image of a character yet, despite having a vast vast knowledge of text.)

Then, I began playing an improvisation using the rhythm of Satie's Gymnopedies.

Jean Henri Ravina was born in 1818 and died in 1906.

Études artistiques Op.83 was published in 1888.

I came across this etude while browsing IMSLP,

I read No.1 and an image came up to me, so I decided to play it.

I played it at a slower tempo than indicated to feel a kind of wind or etc..

I decided to play No.4.  I was drawn to the contrast of the major part and the minor part.

I felt that this piece was a kind of etude while practicing.  However, I liked it gradually.

Oesten: Dolly's Dreaming and Awakening

Digital Piano: KAWAI CA9500GP (442Hz, Loudness)

Home Recording: ZOOM H1n-VP (48kHz 16-bit WAV)

This is one of pieces which I wanted to play and practiced in my childhood.

This time, I changed sounds for parts.

Cradle Song: Concert Piano 1 <- the usual sound

Dolly's Dream: Crystal Piano 1

Dolly Awakes: Pop Piano 1

Dolly Dances: Celesta

Ending: Studio Piano 1

I recorded pieces from Faure's Dolly Suite in  last December.

An idea of title "what is behind the brightness, just patterns" occurred to me while listening the improvisation.

However, I changed the title.

The original improvisation was over 10 minutes.  I have cut the first 21 seconds.

Toward, 251206 improvisation (single and double-tracking)

Recently I recorded Faure's Dolly suite for four-hands by double-recording.

I improvised using the same method.

First, I played and recorded on my electric piano.

Cm and so on.

Then, I played the recording once, and after that I played improvisation while listening to the recording, and continued playing after the recording.

Black flat keys, clusters, D♭ and so on.

It brought back memories of when I had played in a small free jazz band on weekends in a tiny live house.

These past few days I slightly practiced Vierne Nocturne, Ravel Ma mère l’Oye and so on.

The title is Beyond, Dokoka-he, but it doesn't carry much meaning...

Louis Vierne: Suite Bourguignonne, Op.17,

I asked an AI web servece for piano pieces from the time Debussy was living that I didn't know.  Based on the results, I read music sheets on IMSLP.  I thought I might like pieces by Vierne, downloaded his music books, and played them.

I decided to perform the work "Suite bourguignonne".  I think the work is brighter than other works of him.

Also, I decided to perform the work "Silhouettes d'enfants, Op.43".  I recorded it first.

I thought that I heard this music "Suite bourguignonne" before, but I realize I hadn't truly listened to it.

I found that some notes and sounds were unfamiliar to me.

I've not been to Bourguignonne.

Since I think that loud dynamics like ff, fff cannot be achieved on my electric piano, so I considered how to play the parts to sound as if they were ff, fff.

I think that the una corda pedal doesn't produce good sound and it sounds rather blurry on my electric piano.  I refrained from using it for this piece.

Once I stopped practicing this piece.  But I found I still remembered it.  So I decided to record it.

Note patterns and sounds of this piece were unfamiliar to me.  I practiced it in various ways.

I had been playing a left-hand triplet and 8th note, arpeggio as a single chord, trying to grasp it all at once.   However, that put a strain on my left hand, especially beyond an octave.  So I played arpeggios as arpeggios.

I used una corda as indicated, though I feel that it doesn't produce good sound on my electric piano.

Louis Vierne: Silhouettes d'enfants, Op.43

I asked an AI web service to suggest piano pieces from the time Debussy was alive that I had not known.  Based on the results, I read sheet music on IMSLP.  I thought I might enjoy pieces by Vierne, so I downloaded his  piano scores and played them.

This work "Silhouettes d'enfants" has the simplest notation among them.

(Note that the work was composed in 1920, after Debussy had passed away.)

I think that the work has brighter aspects than his other piano works (exerpt for "Suite bourguignonne").

I feel that the work features fading piano tones than the resonance of organ  sounds.

I thought that I heard this music before, but I realize I hadn't truly listened to it.

As this is my first time playing his work, I found that some note patterns  and sounds were unfamiliar to me.

(I listened to some of his works for organ and piano quintet.)

I didn't feel the pieces as they were relating to childlen, rather, I thought they were something else.

I supposed that the composed had been sensing or feeling  silhouettes of children.

I played the pieces simply by reading the sheet music and imagining things that are not real or else.

I think that the una corda pedal of my electric pedal doesn't produce good sound, so usually I refrain from using it.  However, about this work, I think one of intentions behind una corda might have been for a change in tone color, like an organ, so I used it.

I played the pieces in this way this time.  I hope that the composer wouldn't mind too much .... .
